What are the best places to live in Greece for a family

What are the best places to live in Greece for a family?
My mom wants to move to Greece for about 6 months. What are the best places to live in for a single mother of 4 children? Is it better to live on an island, or on the mainland? She wants to live as close to the beach as possible, and living near schools aren't an issue, because she's going to home school.

I wouldn't suggest living on an island if those six months are winter months. Most of them, except the big ones are "deserted" in a sense during winter, and there are not a lot of things for kids to do, neither many services and shops. Does she want some place quiet, or with a lot of fuzz? She wants a place near the sea for the view, or to go easily for a swim (at a sea with clear waters)?

Try looking at Patra Thessaloniki Kalamata Larisa These are all large cities around the mainland that border the shoreline. Any other large city, and if not a smaller town like Nafpaktos which is along the shore. And don't try any island. There are plenty of cities if you look around that have beautiful shores and beaches that are perfect to raise a family in :)

Living in a small island during the winter is hard even for the Greek locals. When the weather is bad and ships and planes can't approach they are a little cut off, especially in case of emergencies. Nevertheless, I've met many non-greeks that chose to live in a small island during winter and they don't regret it; they just get prepared well. But in bigger islands like Crete, Rhodes, Mytilini or some Ionian islands like Corfu that are closer to the mainland and also quite lively during winter, things are easier. The mainland is a safer choise, there are more facilities available and there are many places to choose from.
