what other animals can chinchillas live with?
My 6-7 year old female chinchilla has just died and now my male chinchilla is very lonely. i live in Greece and they don't sell chinchillas here any more. Is their any other animals they can live in the same cage with? Thanks very much

The only animal that may possibly be compatible with a chinchilla diet and habitat wise are degu. Even then, chinchillas have very definite sleep wake times, and degu seemingly have none. Mine will sometimes run all day and all night long on their wheels, squeak and eek constantly, and are just busy little critters. I don't ever recommend caging different animals together. Most have different dietary needs, plus, chins eat their poop. That's not something you want them doing with some other species droppings. If he's lonely, get him a stuffed animal to cuddle with. Many times that's all they need. They just want something to scooch up next to for companionship. Make sure it has no plastic eyes or noses, no loose threads, and no squeaky toys inside. Also be careful of what it is filled with. You can make your own cuddle toy out of fleece and stuff it with fleece. It doesn't have to be fancy. Your chin isn't going to care. If he starts to destroy the stuffie, pull it out of the cage and replace it with a new one. I doubt he would ingest any of stuffie if he ate it, but if the stuffing is questionable, I wouldn't want to worry about it. I would just replace it. Are you sure that chinchillas are not being sold in your neck of the woods? I know we have several people on forum who buy and breed chins in Europe. Maybe there isn't one right down the street from you, but with a little effort I bet you could find one. Have you checked for international forums on chinchillas? That's always a good place to start. You can also have one shipped in, but it's not going to be cheap. The only place that I know of who can ship is http://www.chinchillas.com. You can try joining http:/www.chins-n-hedgies.com and seeing if our members from your way are still active and can help. We'll also be glad to have you join our forum community with general chin knowledge.
