I am planning on moving to Greece. It will probably take a few years until I can, but I was wondering what is the best city. I don't want to live in Athens because it has too many people, and is too loud. I want to know what is a good, quiet, small city or town

I would say Thessaloniki, it's a wonderful city, smaller than Athens and only around one million people. Large enough to be a city, small enough to feel like a home. There are many beautiful sites there and Plateia Aristotelous is a wonderful place to have coffee!! The food is Thessaloniki (particularly the desserts!!!) is much better than Athens. AND if it will be a couple of years before you're here HOPEFULLY the Thessaloniki Metro will be up-and-running. That last bit I wouldn't count on, though :)

It depends on how you imagine your life! For me Nafplio is a beautiful small city... Also, Ioannina, Kastoria, Ksanthi, Trikala, Kavala, Chania are very picturesque and quiet most of the time! And of course the greek islands is an alternative but be prepared to read 1000 books in winter because you'll have nothing else to do then.

Why don't you come over and travel around so you can pick the place you like. My choice whould be Volos.

North London. P.S. Hello John! Still "bipolar?"

Heraklion or Chania on Crete. The second best are the Martians Heights.

Rhodes town.

Being English speaking i would imagine you will want to be close to a community that you will be able to talk your mother language. Corfu and Rhodes are large islands with large english speaking communities and ideal to be in. Especially Corfu has a very large one and you will be also able to find a lot on non British people if you are so inclined. Also a diversity of cultural events that take place all through winter will cut down those 1000 books. Say ... about half .

for me it would be a toss up between Crete and Corfu...

For me the best cities/towns are some suburbs of Athens. These have nothing to do with Athens downtown. There are no illegals, less trash, more parks and trees, many new apartments and stores aswell. Agia Paraskevi, Kifisia, Holargos, Papagos, Ekali. Northern parts of these towns are the best and most quiet places.

It depends on what you want to do with your life once you are there... Greece offers a large diversity of landscapes, both rural and civil, next to the sea or onto the mountains, popular or deserted, with different local attitudes. Just define what would be your ideal life in Greece and I would gladly give you some ideas.

Just to state the obvious, if you want to live in a new country, it would be a good idea to visit it a couple of times to get your bearings. If you want a big, cosmopolitan city that is quieter than Athens, Thessaloniki is your choice. It sounds to me like you'd prefer smaller places, and in fact most Greek cities are actually large towns with populations of 15,000 - 50,000. There are many options from these to choose from, and I won't bother listing them. One of my favourite places in the world, on the lower end of that population range, is Nafplio. Good luck with your searches.
