Thessaloniki! Much better than Athens...

Thessaloniki for sure. Not Athens...that's no place for a family.

an island would be better..a crowded one though coz some are too isolated from the mainland

Mainland - somewhere in easy access to schools/ hospitals etc - Personally I would NEVER live on an island - too quiet in winter and controlled by weather ..... being able to leave etc. We live in Epirus (Preveza) in a medium sized town, where kids cycle to school and play outside in the evenings. I think this is a perfect place to raise kids. It does not rely on tourism and in fact August is very tiring for locals as we have more than usual Greek visitors. There's always something happening - organised activities etc for kids, the beaches are incredible and we are in very easy access to Lefkada (20mins drive) Parga (40mins) and it's only 2 1/2 hrs (inc ferry) to Corfu! (there are also regular ferries to Italy) The mountain villages - are a winter wonderland (ski resort etc) Zagoria villages, The people are proud Greeks and remain the most 'Greek' (like Cretans). Athens is 5hr drive away ... once you've done it a few times it's very easy! Having lived my single life in Athens as a teacher (10yrs)- I would never entertain the thought of bringing up kids there (if you have a choice) life is too expensive and chaotic.

sure it is better to live in maingreece. i prefer central greece and trikala. it is tha capital of west thessaly. it population is 100.000. it is one city that is like a european city and not one traditional greek city.

If you want an island, choose either Crete, Rhodes, Evvia, or Lefkada. Crete and Rhodes are the most city-like islands, and Evvia and Lefakda are connected by bridges. For the mainland, Athens and Thessaloniki are good, but I would suggest a smaller city, such as Ioannina, Larissa, Patras, Kalamata, or even Volos. It really depends on what you are looking for.

I prefer to live close to Athens but not in Athens. Glyfada is my favorite place to live because it has every thing. I love the sea and the drive all the way to Sounio is amazing. The shopping doe's not get any better than Glyfada. But is very, very expensive to live in Glyfada. So i prefer Corinth 45 min. from Athens and very close to Loutraki and Nafplio. This way I can have everything, the big city and also sanity.

Ioannina is great to live, but if you are looking more in the Athens area, I would say Voula, Vouliagmeni, or Glyfada for sure.

Athens is a crazy compact city, and I would not recommend it for a family. Crete was the best island I visited over there. It would be ideal for a family, since it is large with plenty to do and was very safe when I was there.
