Population of Albania - 3,619,778 Lagging behind its Balkan neighbors, Albania is making the difficult transition to a more modern open-market economy. The government has taken measures to curb violent crime, and recently adopted a fiscal reform package aimed at reducing the large gray economy and attracting foreign investment. The economy is bolstered by annual remittances from abroad of $600-$800 million, mostly from Albanians residing in Greece and Italy; this helps offset the towering trade deficit. Agriculture, which accounts for more than one-fifth of GDP, is held back because of lack of modern equipment, unclear property rights, and the prevalence of small, inefficient plots of land. Energy shortages and antiquated and inadequate infrastructure contribute to Albania's poor business environment, which make it difficult to attract and sustain foreign investment. The completion of a new thermal power plant near Vlore and improved transmission line between Albania and Montenegro will help relieve the energy shortages. Also, the government is moving slowly to improve the poor national road and rail network, a long-standing barrier to sustained economic growth. On the positive side, macroeconomic growth was strong in 2003-07 and inflation is low and stable. Population below poverty line in Albania - 25% Population of Greece - 10,722,816 Greece has a capitalist economy with the public sector accounting for about 40% of GDP and with per capita GDP at least 75% of the leading euro-zone economies. Tourism provides 15% of GDP. Immigrants make up nearly one-fifth of the work force, mainly in agricultural and unskilled jobs. Greece is a major beneficiary of EU aid, equal to about 3.3% of annual GDP. The Greek economy grew by nearly 4.0% per year between 2003 and 2007, due partly to infrastructural spending related to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and in part to an increased availability of credit, which has sustained record levels of consumer spending. Greece violated the EU's Growth and Stability Pact budget deficit criteria of no more than 3% of GDP from 2001 to 2006, but finally met that criteria in 2007. Public debt, inflation, and unemployment are above the euro-zone average, but are falling. The Greek Government continues to grapple with cutting government spending, reducing the size of the public sector, and reforming the labor and pension systems, in the face of often vocal opposition from the country's powerful labor unions and the general public. The economy remains an important domestic political issue in Greece and, while the ruling New Democracy government has had some success in improving economic growth and reducing the budget deficit, Athens faces long-term challenges in its effort to continue its economic reforms, especially social security reform and privatization. The mass migration of unemployed Albanians still remains a problem for developed countries, chiefly in Greece and Italy. There is more economic stability in Greece. More jobs and the Albanians can make more money. The reason the Greeks don't really like the Albanians is because the Greeks feel like their jobs are being taken by the Albanians.

I'm an albanian but i would never live in Greece. Not that it's a bad country but because that they hate Albanians. Sometimes i hate those albanians that live there because i wonder myself why would they live there if greeks don't like us. I know hate wouldn't allow me to live there even if my conditions in Albania were bad. I do live in the US though because the US welcomed us here as refugees. Many Albanians emigrated to Italy in the 1990s but now they're staying in Albania because the economy has just picked up because of Tourism. The coastal cities are having a huge improvement with tourist coming from Europe because it is so cheap there compared to other countries and because it has many unspoiled beaches like Greece for example.

The first "wave" of Albanian immigrants reached Greece in the early '90s. Unfortunately, due to political reasons inside Albania back then, the majority of Albanians who finally came to Greece then, were people who had escaped from the albanian prisons and fled to Greece. As a result crime in Greece increased a lot. Besides stealing, those criminal Albanians comitted some very wild crimes here, the kind of crimes that weren't common to us ( wild murders just to get some euros...e.t.c.). These things made Greeks very insecure regarding Albanians. Many Albanians have come to Greece after that first wave and they are nice people who work a lot and mind their families. Unfortunately that first bad impression still remains. We never pay attention to an Albanian who will do something good, but when someone does something bad ( steals , kills....) then everyone says "what can you expect from them?". Prejudice rules.

Well first of all you need to have a clear view of the subject. Greeks don't dispise them. This is not the rigth word. They are prejudices against albanians. This is not unreasonable though. Back in 90's the borders between albania and greece opened and this had as a result many many albanians to migrate in greece. These was due to the political chaos there, this was because they escaped from prison,i dont know but many criminals came here and greece faced many problem with dat. (look at 90's and where is ALbania located http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_homicide_rate_to_1999) This has as a result ,now, where the albanian to greeks rate to be almost 1/13 and the murders to be 1/3 commited by albanian, rapes 1/2 by albanian and robbing 2/3 by from immigrants in general to the tottal. Ususally the "criminal" category is the until 30's single person.... The rest, who has their families over here, are TOTTALY the opposite. Kind,hardworkers,quite.... I don't want to be heard racist but many times i have been teased in the streets by albanians, calling me names(not flattering at all) and talking filth to me. I have been stolen in the street (my wallet) from one,who later have been caught, who was an ALbanian. But even with that,i know many albanians who i HIGHLY respect them. So why do albanians live in Greece? You have to ask them and not in Greek section. From my point of you?? 1)In Greece is easy to come illigaly (compared to USA,where you can't),because is bordered) 2)Like it or not, they have many opportunities, not in job but in education ,in taxes, etc 3)Greece is less racist than Italy, especiall against ALbanians... 4) what i have faced is that, the ones who think that Greece is despising them,is the ones who cause problems in a first place. I have never heard complains of family-men....

1) Albanians come here to find jobs. There's nothing wrong with that, it's the same reason for which Greeks went to the USA, Australia, Germany and other countries. I must also clarify that most Greeks do not hate Albanians and, as far as I know, most Albanians do not hate Greeks. To answer your question, take into account the following: 2) Greece used to "export" immigrants, not receive them. When the first generation of Albanians came, Greeks weren't accustomed to the immigration phenomenon. Nor was the country prepared to receive so many immigrants. The whole thing wasn't very organized... Also, with the first generation of Albanians, criminals and ex-prisoners came to Greece. The criminality rates went up and this contributed to the creation of the stereotype "Albanian=criminal". Greeks started to fear and distrust them. Read Katerina's and vasiliki's answer for more info on that. 3) The economic situation in Greece isn't very good and some people believe or ar led to believe that "the immigrants are stealing their jobs". This unfortunately happens in every country which receives immigrants. 4) Finally, some people are racists/hardcore nationalists and don't want ANY foreigners in their country. Again, these people are a small minority and definitely not only a greek phenomenon: You can find them in every country.

Personally, I would rather live in a poor country among my own people or someone who likes me, than in a rich country among people who hate me. But I agree with Elaine, as usual; I have to say she's the only Greek user of Yahoo Answers who is always objective and doesn't have any prejudices. (Actually, I don't know if she was right about what she said, because many people don't seem to think like her, but I personally agree with her.)

they live in order to get money (i wonder if the hotels built in their country have been built by their work in the fields as they say),and to accuse always Greece as a racist country... In the past they had bycicles, now mercedes... And i am asking you.. when you see albanians buying villas and cars in Greece,ok, i ll say they work, but in case we are so bad and racist how we give them work and then they get money and become rich? Is it just the greeks who dont like them?just do a survey in other countries too

it's easy to get there lol just a few hours drive ..it is very convenient that's why they go there...but personally i would NEVER EVER go to Greece because i have heard that there people are very racist and i don't want to be exposed to that kind of ignorance because i would lose my temper and that wouldn't be good...so instead i'll stay here in USA ( the best country ever by the way ;) )

I have no idea....!!They say they don't like Greeks and they keep coming in Greece...!! Maybe because they can find a job easier or to make money in general?! I don't really know!!It's weird!!

Albanians are coming to greece because they do not have a chance for better life in Albania. When they come in greece without money to eat and they beg the local people to give them jobs. When albanians make money they say that nobody help them and that albania is better than greece. The most insane of all is that they think greece wouldn't be able to survive without them.My opinion is to get the hell out of greece if they do not like it.We give them education and they are not happy about it,we also give them the chance to go to university and have a better life but they do not appreciate it.
